The Palais de Rumine in Lausanne

The Palace de Rumine, Lausanne

Standing on the Place de la Riponne in Lausanne, the Rumine Palace was built between 1891 and 1906 by the architect Gaspard André to accommodate the University, the Cantonal Library and a number of museums both scientific and artistic. Its construction was possible thanks to an endowment by a rich resident of the city, one Gabriel de Rumine. Executed in the style of the Florentine Renaissance, this considerable edifice constitutes one of the most successful examples of the productions of Beaux-Arts academic architecture, happily combining decorative exuberance with cunningly functional design.
