“An abattoir should be thought of as a factory and built as simply as possible, whilst not neglecting its aesthetic appeal.” Designed according to the principle of forward movement, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and built using contemporary materials, the La-Chaux-de-Fonds abattoir, which came into operation in 1906, combines functional rationality with an almost castle-like aesthetic, inspired by the German Renaissance. Progressing from traditional, small-scale slaughtering to supplying a city, applying stringent health and safety standards, and shielding the public from the reality of animal slaughter: such is its raison d’être. Oversized and overtaken by market developments, the abattoir ceased to fulfil its original function in the early 21st century and is now undergoing conversion.
